Happy Holidays!

It's the night before the night before Christmas, and all through my home, the holiday spirit is stirring, finally, unleashed, ready to roam.

It's that time of year again; the winter holidays, usually a time of family, friends, food, and looking back. I know you're all likely very busy, so I won't keep you long. Just wanted to share some thoughts before the holidays begin.

Learning to Draw and Letting Go of Perfectionism

Do you like to draw? Do you sketch or doodle things in your free time, or as part of your career? Many people do, but for the past decade, I have had such a strong aversion to drawing that the experience literally evoked physical pain. Today, we're going to talk about that, and how I've overcome it.

My Two Days in Marseille!

Recently, I had the fortune of being able to represent Northern Sky Research at a Digital Ship Maritime forum in Marseille. The discussion was lively, all about data applications and technology within the maritime industry, and it was perfect timing, hot on the heels of NSR releasing its Big Data via Satellite report.

Turning 30-Years Old

As I sit writing this post, I am currently on a plane to Marseille, in southern France. I am flying down to attend a one-day conference on “smart shipping”, in which I am moderating a session and learning all that I can. While I plan to write a separate post about the trip, this situation is a good frame of reference for this post here, where I am in my life right now, turning 30-years old.

Is Pluto a Planet?

In 2006, a collection of scientists known as the International Astronomical Union produced a scientific definition for a planet. This definition came with certain criteria, which Pluto failed to meet, and so Pluto was not a planet anymore.

Recently, a different group of scientists, deciding that the IAU definition was incorrect, and spurred on by public outcry over Pluto's "demotion", published an article with a different definition for planets, which now not only includes Pluto, but 109 other objects in our solar system, including our Moon!

So, which is it? Is Pluto a planet, or not? What makes a planet? Why should we care?

The Difference a Year Makes...

The other day, I got McDonald's for dinner, and it set off an entire chain of thoughts I've had percolating for some time.

Last weekend, while Juliette was attending a heavy metal show, I went out for some fast food. I walked in, ordered on the machine, picked up the meal, and I was about 15 steps away from the restaurant when I realized that I didn't know how much it cost. I hadn't checked. I hadn't agonized over it. I just bought it.

That's a major difference from where I was a year ago.
